LIFE AFTER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

REMEMBER: YOU ARE NOT TO BLAME

You weren’t abused because you’re a bad person. In fact, you’re not to blame for the abusive behavior of your partner. What happened to you was wrong. No one deserves to be physically or emotionally abused. Above all, it’s important to get past the shame, guilt, and fear your abuser made you feel and focus on becoming the good person you know you are.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE YOURSELF

You’re a survivor. Firstly, you need to start believing in yourself again. You aren’t the person your abuser made you out to be. It may take a while, and require a lot of hard work, but you need to develop the strength and confidence to prevent yourself from making the mistake of falling into another abusive relationship.

GIVE YOURSELF THE TIME TO HEAL

Be patient. Getting past the domestic abuse and domestic violence of your previous relationship isn’t going to happen overnight. Also, keep in mind that emotional healing takes time. Try to eliminate any self-doubts you may have and learn to trust your judgment and instincts.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

You need to start looking out for yourself. Being in an abusive relationship can take a lot out of you, emotionally and physically. Likewise, your physical health can have a big impact on your emotional health. Eating well, getting lots of exercise, and plenty of sleep will give you the physical strength you need to deal with life’s challenges.
